Simple solutions for Global warming

Global warming may be complicated. But some simple steps from everyone can contribute a lot.

* Consume less of anything. Lesser consumption leads to lesser material need, lesser energy needs, lesser Green house gases release. In a way, ancient Indian life is sustainable by philosophy as it advocated a simple living.

* Waste less. MaKe full use of anything you have. Try recycling.

* Close the water tap when unnecessary.

* Open your windows. use natural light. Switch off the extra / unwanted lights. Supersitions like Goddess Lakshmi won’t come to your home if வாசப்படி விளக்கு is not lit is not true 🙂

* Use your foot or bicycle for nearby distances. For long distances, prefer Public transport which require less fuel per person.

Here are few more Environment and Energy saving tips.

    1. Avoid using plastic bags – use cloth bags while going for shopping as plastics are non biodegradable, hence they do not decompose and it takes 500 to 1000 years to decompose.

    2. Turn off the tap when brushing and soaping your hands which can save around 16 litres of water a day (Calculate for an year..!!??)

    3. Refrigerator uses huge amount of energy. Do not open refrigerator door regularly.

    4. Tube lights and bulbs which are dirty can consume more energy and can absorb 50% of the light. Dust them regularly.

    5. Plant shade trees near your house – this can help greatly reduce the need to cool a home and thereby reducing the usage of Air conditioner

    6. Use rechargeable batteries – this can help reduce costs and they are also cheaper in the long run

    7. Buy local produce – It conserves the fuel, cuts pollution and boosts local economy

    8. Keep your car’s tire inflated – it can improve the fuel effeciency of your car

    9. Drive at a moderate speed as to 50-60 mph which means your emissions will be the lowest.

    10. Do not cut trees – as one tree can store 13 pounds of carbon. When being cut can lead to more carbon emissions.

    11. Use handkerchief instead of tissue paper – as it takes 6,000,000 trees to make one year’s worth of tissues for the world.

  2. Nirmala, that’s lot of info. you sacrificed a post in ur blog 🙂

    Pleasure is mine Ravi.

I believe many might have heard about a well renowned architect called as Laurie Baker.

He is a British born Indian architect – who chose to live in Kerala since 1945. He is known for his cost effective as well as ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY EFFICIENT architecture.

His official website (http://lauriebaker.net/) provides information about his life, his principles and his belief’s towards architecture. He felt that a house need not be build with high worth materials but with low cost materials which are available locally. He simply hated the concept of plasters and paints. His houses were made of locally burnt bricks and mud walls. His work in Kerala has brought a new life style to the city. He felt that a house can be built without destroying the trees. Hence, most of the houses built by him possess that nature look (one might get the feel of living with nature).

A typical house which he constructed consisted of a Indian Solar hot water system which will be mounted on the roof. A biogas tank will be providing fuel for the cooking requirements. Discarded fruits and vegetable matter from the kitchen will provide fuel for the biogas tank. Waste water will be treated onsite using certain technology which is directed into the biogas tank and purified water returned to the agricultural use.

Amazing construction technique. Astonished after reading it..!!!

Hope this will be helpful to be posted in this section.

Many might have heard people around speaking about Global Warming but may not understand what it really means and its consequences and how they are formed. Before speaking about the simple steps to avoid Global Warming, I believe it is mandatory to understand what is Global Warming and their effects. Here is a short description about the same.

    What is Global Warming?
Global Warming is the observed and projected increases in the average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans.

    How is Global Warming formed?
Global Warming is caused due to the formation of Greenhouse Gases.

In a normal situation, when sunlight reaches earth surface some of its radiations are absorbed by Earth to warm the Earth while the remaining radiations get reflected back into the space.

But in case of Global Warming situation, when sunlight reaches the earth’s surface some of the radiations are absorbed as usual. But the remaining radiation while trying to reflect back into the space are caught by the GREENHOUSE gases which absorb these radiations and makes the Earth more warmer thereby leading to Global Warming.

The Greenhouse gases act like a mirror and reflect back to the Earth a part of heat radiation which increases the Earth temperature. The higher the concentration of green house gases like CO2 in the atmosphere, the more heat energy is being reflected back to Earth. The emission of CO2 into the environment mainly from burning of fossil fuels (oil, gas, petrol, kerosene etc).

The major natural GREENHOUSE gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone.

In my coming posts, we can understand how this Global Warming is a cyclic process, how it affects the environment and what are the simple ways to stop producing greenhouse gases.
