1. Lightning fast. Works great with Wikipedia pages, vbulletin forums, Google applications like Gmail, Google reader.

2. Connectivity. Not only does http://nonoh.net loads damn fast, i am also getting connected to all calls without delay and fail. From Firefox I couldn’t connect properly many times.

3. Larger screen space. Uncluttered menu. I used to press F11 often in Firefox too.

4. Download manager. It is easier to locate downloads now.

5. Tabs Managment. Tabs opened from one page are grouped together. You can close all tabs except the current tab, close tabs to the right, close tabs opened by the current tab. You can drag and reorder the them. You can pull out a tab and get a new window.

6. Isolated tab processes. One tab doesn’t crash the whole window.

7. Pleasing interface colour.

8. Application shortcuts. Now i made application shortcuts for Wikipedia, Google reader, Gmail, Twitter, Nonoh. I use them so often that i better think them of as applications not as webpages. Mozilla Prism does this too. But the integration and ease of use is better.

9. Speed dial.

10. Easy to install. Imports Favourites, browsing history, passwords.

11. Inspect element. The view source page is rich in presentation.

Could have been better:

1. Some media plugins not there.

2. Websites using Flash crash / stop sometimes.

3. No Master Password option. Privacy concerns if more people can access your computer.

4. Highlighting, selecting is not smooth. Cursor placement at the end by mouse also not possible.

5. Except for NHM writer, Phonetic based indian input method editor softwares like E-Kalappai not working. Otherwise only Tamil99 or Inscript based keyboard users can write in Tamil.

6. I am too used to Firefox 3 location bar. It was better in ease of use. I could type any letter in the website title / url and get my sites. Also, it displayed the title name above url which is easy to read.

7. Speed dial is not accurate and we have no control over it.

8. No auto feed discovery.

9. Could allow installing Firefox add-ons. I miss them.

10. No auto suggest for searching bookmarks, history, downloads etc.,

11. Sometimes freezes when visiting Flash, Adobe Pdf pages.

Bruno brought to my notice that there is something fishy about the IIT seats being left unfilled.

This seems like a big scandal and completely insane !!

The people at the IIT admission committee don’t seem to know how to implement reservation or they don’t want to !

This is how reservation works:

The eligibility marks in Maths, Physics, Chemistry are 5, 0 and 3. Those who got more than eligibility marks can all apply to get admitted.

Say, we have totally 100 seats. and 20 for Open competition, 40 for OBC, 40 For SC-ST (just some random percents)

Top 20 rankers (including OBC, SC-ST not just FC) will get admitted into the 20 seats for Open competetion. The aggregate score of the 20th person will be the cut-off for Open competition. You should note that the cut-off is an incidental score set by the 20th person.

Then the next 40 seats are filled by the next 40 Top ranking OBC. even if the 40th person got just 5, 0, 3 the minimum eligible mark, he deserves to get the seat filled. He doesn’t need to have a top score.

…and the procedure continues for SC-ST.

No one fixes the cut-off first. It gets automatically fixed when the seats are filled. It can only be known after all seats are filled and serves as an indication for next year candidates how much they may need to score to get admitted in their quota.

fixing the cut-off mark first and driving away prospective students from each quota and proposing to merge these seats to common pool and get some more FC getting added is plain cheating.

For anyone who follows TNPCEE procedure, we expect that the cut-off marks for Open competetion, OBC, SC-ST should be really distinct and significantly lesser than Open competetion.

This is how reservation should work.

Coming to the second point you know the how Indian system currently is, in which we are never going to get the correct picture (even RTI is made mockery but still a welcome change). So I really dont have a statistical analysis to show case that BCs are more favoured. More from random assessment I can definitely say SC and STs are less favoured compared to BCs(including OBCs) and FCs. My argument is simply is this. Say, X students out of total Y population gets the benefit because of reservation/money/social power for every community. So

X(FC)/Y(Tot FC) > X(BC)/Y(Tot BC) > X(SC)/Y(Tot SC) > X(ST)/Y(Tot ST) Adding another dimension is the inclusivity of women across all categories.

Read this too http://keetru.com/dalithmurasu/apr08/fund.php

At August 5, 2008, Bruno wrote:

//Say, X students out of total Y population gets the benefit because of reservation/money/social power for every community//

If so

SC = 1

ST = 1

FC > 1 (more seats than population percentage)

BC < 1 (less seats than population percentage)

So the most favoured is FC

Least favoured in BC

-

This is as per your logic

Can you enlighten us more :) :) :)

At August 5, 2008, Bruno wrote:

//even RTI is made mockery but still a welcome change).//

But only because of RTI, IITs were forced to release the marks

and

Suddenly we see candidates from reserved category getting ranks in the Open Merit List

How come BC Candidates became so intelligent in one year :) :) :) :)

-

When the mark details were not released - NO Reserved Candidates in Open List

When Marks have to be released - More Reserved Candidates in Open List

-

Does this tell you about IIT

At August 5, 2008, ravi wrote:

sathia, i agree there are pros and cons and definitely reservation can be implemented in a better way. but even with the current implementation, compared to the cons, the pros are better, i feel. so instead of having no reservation, i am for having it in some way. Any detail on how this roster works will help as I really have no idea on this system.

b) What about central govt. Since I was subjectively putting the x>y>z>a formula now you are coming out with numbers I will put the question differently.

 a) Do you mean to say that out of the say 60% of BCs ONLY 27% actually get seats and they need more % of seats reserved. If that is the situation all FCs, SCs and STs will get seats everywhere. SCs and STs are more than that % in different states.

Then by this time atleast one generation of SC /STs would have educated.

With all paratmeters (not only on reservation) BCs and FCs are enjoying more seats compared to other categories. FC also be because of the background they had and the money power most have. Poor people in FC. Women in all categories. The worst deal is for STs. I am ignoring all these people for which I dont have an answer but would definitely see there is a better system to follow inclusivity and remove imbalance rather than exclusivity and punishing.

Read also this in sync with what I am saying and post your thoughts on that too.

At August 7, 2008, Bruno wrote:

//a) From which year this was formulated and this is the procedure. I am not denying the benefits of reservation. I Understand the rationale and SUPPORT IT.

2. I do understand that numbers are for GC and NOT the overall quota( I did my schooling in govt/aided school and college all across TN, how can anyone escape without understanding)

My only point is BC candidates are overtly favoured. I tried to prove that with the GC split for category.

I will try to put it again.

The 31% GC quota adds up like this=3.51(FC) + 25.54(BC)+1.98(SC)+(0.06)(ST)

The rest 69% is reserved except for FCs.

So the 100% adds up like this

1. BC's in GC Quota+ BC quota ( 82.4/100 X 31 %(GC) + 50**)= 75.54 % of seats are with BCs

2. Sc's in GC quota + SC quota( 6% out of 31%+ 18% ) = 19.98 are with SCs

3. STs in GC quota + sT quota( 1% out of 31% + 1%) = 1.06% are with STs

4. FCs in GC quota = 3.51% are with FCs

Hope I am clear and you would still see that 75% are with BCs. I strongly believe that this is not justified because a population of 50% enjoying a 75% seat is not correct then it needs attention to see whether there is a need to reduce the reservation for them or needs a redistribuion of that extra % to SCs and STs. There is a flip side to this I really have doubt all these 75% are really BCs? Are they really Backward Classes?

I dont have actual data to show this but No oNE would.

1) I have seen a lot of people from same subsect getting coverted into BC categories. There are few castes ( I dont want to name for flaming here) for which one of them is BC and other is Fc.

2) FC guys getting BC certificates by changing caste itself.

3) BC guys getting MBC certificates.

The first 2 items are very very prevalant and is a big time business. This infact affect real BC students who deserve a seat. So the only way is to taking the castes which are having an anamoly one by one out of the basket ( after justification obviously) and then redistributing to SC/ST or reducing overall reservation.

**Quota in TN

- 30 percent for backward classes -,

- 20 percent for most backward classes - and denotified tribes -,

- 18 percent for scheduled castes -, and

- 1 percent for scheduled tribes -.

At August 11, 2008, msathia wrote:

Ravi,

// According to my blog post, it proves IIT didn’t implement reservation properly. One to scrap the entire system and introduce a new one. The second is to improve the existing system. Latter is more feasible option. But before doing that 1) cleanup on the caste certificates is seriously required. We have to follow state based reservation %s and implementation the one like what you detailed in the blog post or whatever is correct way and agreed upon everywhere. Implementation has to be mandated all across all institutions and government agencies. 2) Once in 5 or 10 years a check on whichever castes(not the categories) can get a significant % of seats everytime has to be moved out of BC list and make them compete in OC and redistribute the % to SC or ST if needed. Reduce the % of reservation every 10 years by 1% or 2%.

Would you give an ideal % breakup and justify it based on stats, evidences?
0. Visit your friend’s profile pages and check whom they are following.

1. Check to whom your friends are sending @ replies often. These are active, interesting people.

2. Now, Go to http://search.twitter.com and search for things of your interest. Select profiles with interesting content.

From all the above profiles,

* Select profiles with followers / following ratio 1 or more. The more the better.

* Select profiles with lot of links in the updates. Links mean information.

Remember: The number of your followers isn’t that important. The number of people you follow, their quality of tweets is important. The more the people and better they are, you are better informed.

Twitter Time management:

Twitter failed to give a statutory warning that it is highly addictive. I am already seeing many of the reticent bloggers spending a lot of time in Twitter. True that twitter induces conversation by design. But still…

* Don’t keep a Twitter Desktop / browser app or Twitter website open all the time. The notifications, refreshings will suck your time.

* Switch off the followers notifications or send it to your secondary email.

* If you get annoyed by @ replies between your friends, you can switch them off from the settings. But these replies only make the place lively, informative, interesting. You will find new people to follow.

* Do add a clear profile picture. Helps your friends to identify you easily.

* It’s best open once / twice a day, read the tweets, reply and close it down.

* Read the tweets in reverse chronological order. It makes more sense.

* Don’t flood with tweets. Anything more than 10 a day, people are starting to get annoyed.

Twitter as Microblogging platform:

If you are seriously considering Twitter as a Microblogging platform and caring less and less for your regular blogs, think twice now. I find Twitter great to stay in touch with friends, get help, social networking but I rate it very poorly as a Microblogging platform. Microblogging is not just being about short.

Why?

* Twitter is unreliable. Goes down many times. I would like to blog when I like not when Twitter is fine.

* You don’t own the content. Right now, you can’t export your tweets to another service.

* Content accessibility is blocked in many ways. They cut down the archives after mere 5-10 pages. I have 1000+ tweets gone for ever

* Your readers need to register, understand twitter before they respond to you.

* Comments / replies are spread over and don’t make sense many times. It is confusing for which tweet you get the reply.

* The 140 character limit can be unnecessarily limiting.

* The TinyURLs don’t help you understand where you are gonna land.

* No way to find related content as there are no tags and categories.

* No audio, visual treat as you can’t embed anything.

* Very Poor RSS feed service.

So, what is Twitter best for?

* To help, respond to your friends with @ replies. Whether you like it or not, the crowd is there. Stay in touch.

* Ask for help. Twitter crowd by design and habit, responds faster than light.

* Anything you would like to write but would not care to archive.

* To follow news, trends.

* Shed your online image and be just friends with people.

And that’s all the twitter wisdom I got in 8 months of tweeting !

Whenever you have a problem with your WordPress blog,

0. Don’t Panic. So far as your WordPress database and wp-contents folder is fine, you are fine.

1. Switch to the default WordPress template and deactivate all plugins. If you are fine now, switch to another trouble free template or activate the plugins one by one to find out the culprit.

If you still have problem, it is possibly a WordPresss problem. Then, search WordPress support forum for solutions and ask a new question if needed.

2. Ask your friends using WordPress for help.

3. Create a test installation of WordPress in another server and make sure it isn’t a hosting problem.

4. Try all new WordPress upgrades at the above test installation before you try with your regular blogs.

* Consume less of anything. Lesser consumption leads to lesser material need, lesser energy needs, lesser Green house gases release. In a way, ancient Indian life is sustainable by philosophy as it advocated a simple living.

* Waste less. MaKe full use of anything you have. Try recycling.

* Close the water tap when unnecessary.

* Open your windows. use natural light. Switch off the extra / unwanted lights. Supersitions like Goddess Lakshmi won’t come to your home if வாசப்படி விளக்கு is not lit is not true

* Use your foot or bicycle for nearby distances. For long distances, prefer Public transport which require less fuel per person.

Turn off the tap when brushing and soaping your hands which can save around 16 litres of water a day (Calculate for an year..!!??)

3. Refrigerator uses huge amount of energy. Do not open refrigerator door regularly.

4. Tube lights and bulbs which are dirty can consume more energy and can absorb 50% of the light. Dust them regularly.

5. Plant shade trees near your house - this can help greatly reduce the need to cool a home and thereby reducing the usage of Air conditioner

6. Use rechargeable batteries - this can help reduce costs and they are also cheaper in the long run

7. Buy local produce - It conserves the fuel, cuts pollution and boosts local economy

8. Keep your car's tire inflated - it can improve the fuel effeciency of your car

9. Drive at a moderate speed as to 50-60 mph which means your emissions will be the lowest.

10. Do not cut trees - as one tree can store 13 pounds of carbon. When being cut can lead to more carbon emissions.

11. He felt that a house need not be build with high worth materials but with low cost materials which are available locally. He simply hated the concept of plasters and paints. His houses were made of locally burnt bricks and mud walls. His work in Kerala has brought a new life style to the city. He felt that a house can be built without destroying the trees. But the remaining radiation while trying to reflect back into the space are caught by the GREENHOUSE gases which absorb these radiations and makes the Earth more warmer thereby leading to Global Warming.

The Greenhouse gases act like a mirror and reflect back to the Earth a part of heat radiation which increases the Earth temperature. The higher the concentration of green house gases like CO2 in the atmosphere, the more heat energy is being reflected back to Earth. The emission of CO2 into the environment mainly from burning of fossil fuels (oil, gas, petrol, kerosene etc).

The major natural GREENHOUSE gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone.

In my coming posts, we can understand how this Global Warming is a cyclic process, how it affects the environment and what are the simple ways to stop producing greenhouse gases.

Regards

Nirmala

1. Ask your friends to pay all your bills right from booking the air ticket, pick up, local expenditures. They will try all the cheapest ways possible with their local knowledge. Though you may pay back, they will think twice before they draw their own money and would think not to burden you with too many expenses.

2. Don’t change to local currency. When you have money in hand, you go on a spending spree. Depend on your friends for purchases, so you will think twice before bothering your friend.

3. Visit only those places which don’t charge an entry ticket. If you have to visit, let it be world renowned. European cities promote tourism heavily and market even stupid museums, attractions with an entry ticket.

4. Find friends enthusiastic in traveling. Package deals are cheaper when you are a group. example: EuroPass for train travel.

5. Keep watching for tourist offers. Ask the Chinese guys They are the best source of info for cheap travel.

6. Take the Bus trip for short distances. It’s tiring but cheap.

7. Stay in Youth Hostels. They have sufficient comfort.

8. Plan in advance. Rush for the tickets.

9. Have one meal in the finest restaurant to know the local cuisine. Other times, stick to the cheap Fast Food restaurants or eat in your friend’s home

This is how poor students roam around

Can you share more tips with me?

By bus one way 100$. FungWa travels from China town to and fro 25$ :-))

Hostel staying is not possible for working class people, I think. So my 2 cents apart from your points applicable to US.

1. Plan properly before you travel. Book hotels early.

2. Do research, decide, and then just stick to travel plan. Dont try to clutter your travel with lots of places in short time span. You will loose more money in travel

3. Do a cost benefit analysis in case of Taxi Vs Renting a car. sometimes Taxis work out cheaper.

4. Carry chargers, video storage accessories, batteries. Avoid buying them in tourist spots.
